Since my internship at Bellevue under Dr. Scherr’s direction, he has remained an icon in medical education with a national reputation. He has affected the careers of literally thousands of medical students and residents. I realize in retrospect that on that fateful day in his office, his confidence in me was expressed when he said, “Look, I know you can do it. Just do the very best you can. Now turn around and get back to work.” That gave me sufficient confidence in myself to continue and “go the distance.” To this day, I remain grateful to Larry Scherr for what he did.
